Purpose. Records the topic, attendance and outcomes of the daily pre-shift toolbox talk in each department.

1.Purpose of the toolbox talk

The toolbox talk is the daily conversation between the supervisor and the shift about the work planned, the hazards expected and anything learned from the previous shift. It is also the place where new procedures, safety alerts and incident learnings are communicated. Attendance is a condition of starting work.

2.Running the talk

The supervisor must run the talk at the start of every shift and keep it to ten to fifteen minutes. Cover the production plan, permits in place, any plant out of service, the safety topic of the day and any items raised by the team. Encourage questions and record any hazard or suggestion raised.

3.Recording

Every attendee must sign the record. The supervisor must record the topic, key points, questions raised and actions agreed with the person responsible and the due date. The record must be filed in the department folder by the end of the shift and actions must be entered in the relevant register.

4.Topics

Topics are drawn from the monthly safety calendar, recent incidents and hazards, seasonal risks such as heat, and changes to plant or procedure. The Safety and Environment Manager publishes the calendar each month and supervisors must add local topics.

  • Silica dust and respirator fit
  • Mobile plant and pedestrian zones
  • Isolation and lockout
  • Manual handling of bags and moulds
  • Working at height
  • Heat management
  • Emergency response and muster points

5.Follow up

Actions from the talk must be reviewed at the next talk until closed. Hazards raised must be entered in the incident and hazard register on the same day.
